Japan increases market access for Canadian beef

The Canadian Government announced that the Government of Japan has allowed expanded market access for Canadian beef from cattle older than thirty months of age.

Japan is an important market for Canadian beef, with exports to Japan totalling almost $215 million in 2018. Based on industry estimates, the new expanded access has the potential to further increase exports by up to 20 per cent.

Canadian beef exports to Japan have increased over 117% in the first three months of 2019, compared to the same period last year.

Under the Trans-Pacific Partnership, Japan’s 38.5% tariffs on beef imports has already been reduced to 26.5%, and will be further reduced to 9% over 14 years. This has provided Canadian exporters with a clear tariff advantage over our key competitors.
